As Elk valley let's go of 140 workers because that is what the Coal mining business is like. But in Alberta that won't stop the companies from not making money.. They will be sitting in the Headwaters with massive no cost Permanent Diversion Licenses (PDL) for freshwater for 10 years at a time. They can let anyone extract it from "their" water source and charge "access" fees at whatever rate they set. THE MONEY WILL BE MADE BY THE WATER LICENCE!

I really hope they can stop any coal mines anywhere in Canada. They are horrible polluters that create forever chemicals like in the Elk Valley BC. You are correct when you say they just pay the fines and carry on. Shut the suckers down and charge them however many billions to clean up their fucking mess.

I've read the selenium treating proposal and its not an solid, hammered-flat engineered solution to address the poisoning issue - its a wish fulfillment puffery theory full of hope and aspiration and should-a's and could-a's. The cold reality is the selenium cannot be sequestered - it will pollute what ever water course it escapes into.

Albertans should be less appalled that the UCP can be bought, but for how little it takes to put them in the pocket. One cent per ton royalty! Jesus wept. These Australian buccaneers don't pay that low of a rate anywhere in the world! But in Alberduh, its peachy keen. Brian Jean should be horsewhipped.

At the very least, can we crowd-source the hire of two 30 tonne dump-trucks full of coal and dump them through the front windows of both Jean's and Smith's constituency offices?

Let's stop fucking around! These UCP pricks have got to go!

Clear, informative and witty! But this describes an absolutely serious issue. While natural resources are a huge part of the Canadian economy the destruction of the environment and the long term impacts have not received due attention. Who is responsible for cleaning up the mine tailing ponds, the open pits from other mining, the degradation of landscapes and the myriad of environmental repercussions? Who is responsible for closing and making safe the orphan wells?

Who’s kidding who ? if they say 95-99% of selenium removed , at best it’s likely 70-85% .

Biologically speaking , for something to be reduced from toxin to benign, usually number of orders of magnitude lower is needed. Ie 99% is 2 log reduction. I’m no environmental toxicologist but log 2 reduction is pretty modest , especially if you’re considering a shit ton of selenium run off to begin with. You also have to consider how it’s measured. In winter there won’t be much runoff so you can say over the year we only had x amount run off. But trout in a stream can be killed by a brief high concentration that might happen with June rains .

Well done mayor snodgrass

Selenium, once introduced, cannot be removed from a waterway.

So anyone concerned about destroying our environment, poisoning the water for the agriculture industry and towns / cities downstream for the sake of an Australian coal company is an Alberta hater and a leftist?

I think those who are in favour of coal mining are actually the Alberta haters (& short term thinkers).

If you’re going run with a headline that uses the phrase “coal-lickin’ Premier,” then you will get no respect.

Only ones who hate Akberta are the UCP and those who vote for them. They hate Albertan’s and Alberta because everything they do is to undercut this province and the citizens.
